Displacement Reactions & the Reactivity Series

The reactivity of the halogens decreases down the group. A method used to demonstrate this is to put the halogens into competition with each other to determine which is more reactive. These reactions are called displacement reactions as the more reactive element will displace the less reactive element.

The animation below shows how the reactivity series for the halogens can be determined by a combination of displacement reactions.
